In 1644, English statesman, Oliver Cromwell, banned the eating of pie well sort of. Cromwell was a Puritan Presbyterian. (Say that 5 times fast) During the English civil war the Monarchy was out and the Parliament was in. Cromwell was the head honcho, he declared that the country needed a mandatory day of fasting, and somehow pie got thrown in the mix... specifically Mince Pie. So from 1644 -1660 Mince Pie was out, so for 16 years, pie eating and making went underground until the Restoration leaders got into power in 1660 and lifted the ban on Mince pie.
